寺院の号、さらぬ万の物にも、名を付くる事、
昔の人は、少しも求めず、たゞ、ありのまゝに、やすく付けけるなり。
この比は、深く案じ、才覚をあらはさんとしたるやうに聞ゆる、いとむつかし。
人の名も、目慣れぬ文字を付かんとする、益なき事なり。
何事も、珍しき事を求め、異説を好むは、浅才の人の必ずある事なりとぞ。

訳
お寺の名前や、その他の色々な物にも名前を付けるとき、
昔の人は、何も考えずに、ただありのままに、わかりやすく付けたものだ。
最近はあれこれ考え、自分の賢明さを見せつけようとしているようで嫌味なものだ。
人の名前にしても、見たことのない珍しい漢字を使っても、まったく意味のないことである。
どんなことでも、珍しいことを追求して、一般的じゃないものをありがたがるのは、
薄っぺらな教養しかない人が必ずやりそうなことである。
